Hair | My Laser Hair Removal Journey.

Hello my gorgeous friends! I posted the below picture on my Instagram which caused lots of people to get in touch and ask questions about laser hair removal. So, I thought what better way to tell everyone about it, than in a blog post?! I am going to run through my laser hair removal journey as I have spent a lot of money on the wrong treatments thinking I would get long lasting, effective results. So, I really hope this helps you out!

Hair - Laser Hair Removal Indian Skin Review

IPL aka Intense Pulsed Light

There are lots (and I mean lots) of at home IPL hair removal kits which personally I wasn’t drawn to. When it comes to lasers and intense skincare treatments I am one of those people who prefers to get a professional to work their magic on me, rather than trying to become one by getting a kit from my local drug store. I went to a clinic in my hometown which had recently opened for some treatments.

I went to about 2 sessions, but didn’t see any results – AT ALL. So, it was fair to say I wasn’t going to waste any more money. Strike one.

FYI – I know people who have had treatments of IPL done (mainly all Asian/Indian skin types) and I have been told it takes a lot of sessions to see results. I have also been told by my current laser technician (and head trainer & educator of Polaris Laser Hair Removal) that IPL does not work on Indian skin and has short term benefits. It basically isn’t the best laser for long term hair-free fuss.

YAG Laser (or so I was told!)

Next time round, I decided to go for a YAG laser but to my luck, my technician had blagged her way into making me think she was doing me a favour. When in reality, her so called YAG laser was more of an IPL treatment then anything else.

I can tell you that it made my hair a little fainter, but nothing drastic – and I had at least 6 sessions. Once again, I wasted not only my time in travel but a lot of money! Strike two.

Long Pulsed Nd: YAG Laser

For the past 5 months or so I have been going to a lovely laser technician, who lucky for me, is based in the same county as me! I had told her all the problems I have had in the past with laser hair removal and she gave me her honest and professional advice. She explained to me that IPL isn’t very effective (especially on Asian skin) for hair removal. It works whilst you are getting it done but give it a year or so and you will see your hair growth coming back. The penetration of the laser isn’t as deep and doesn’t target the hair follicle to the extent as a YAG laser does.

I then explained the so-called YAG laser treatment I was getting before coming to her. That is when she did a little digging (in her spare time) and informed me that I had been missold my laser treatment. The laser which I had been getting done was more similar to IPL than a proper YAG laser. It was more of a diode – basically meaning that I wasn’t going to get the same results has I would have with a proper or should I say real YAG laser!

She then told me all about her laser. The laser she uses is the Long Pulsed Nd: YAG Laser by Polaris Medical (you can see their website by clicking HERE). She is a professional educator/trainer for this laser and has been in the industry for +20 years – she basically knows her shiz.

This laser can be used for hair removal of hair on all skin types, light to dark. One of the main advantages of this laser is that its melanin absorption is very low. Melanin is what gives your skin it’s colour. The more melanin you have, the darker your skin and vice versa. Because of it’s low absorption of it, there is very little risk of your skin to get damaged by hyper/hypo pigmentation. This means that the long pulsed Nd:Yag lasers is idea for for hair removal on medium to dark skin!

Pre-laser Treatment

I have to go with clean, lotion/potion free, make-up free, perfume/deoderant free and hair free. Yep, which means you have to shave before hand (everywhere you want to target!). This is so the laser can get to the folicle without any hair strands getting in the way.

I have learnt the hard way by accidently having some perfume on my neck and the laser burning my skin – luckily it wasn’t that bad (my Elizabeth Adren Eight Hour Cream sorted me out!). However, this is common and can happen.

During Laser Treatment

During the laser session, the part/s of your body are sectioned off (as you can see in the picture above). The Long Puled Nd: YAG laser is used with an air-conditioning type cooling tube which is hovered over the area of your skin as it is getting lasered – this is so you don’t feel the heat. The sensation of getting this done is like someone poking you with a needle. Depending on your pain threshold and/or the area you may not feel it at all.

The laser she uses is very similar to the one Kim Kardashian uses – I can tell because of the pictures she had posted onto her Twitter years ago 🙂

Post Laser Treatment

After having the treatment, I have to make sure I don’t go to the gym, stay away from hot showers/baths and can’t put anything onto my skin as it is uber sensitive. After 24hours, you’re good to get back to normal 🙂

One thing I would say is you have to use SPF because you don’t want to get pigmentation in your skin. Even though this laser is super safe, it’s always good to be safe rather than sorry. To be quite honest, I only put SPF on my face and not really anything on my body. I’ve had no problems, even after sun bathing away in Marbella 😉

Is it painful? This all depends on your pain threshold! Your consultation will measure this.

Is there anything I can do to help the process? Don’t wear any make-up, perfume, lotions or potions on your skin. My technician advised me to come to my session and see how I got on with the pain. If it was painful, she said to go ahead an take a paracetamol 30mins before my treatment. But so far, so good 🙂

How long does the hair removal last for? There is no such thing a permanent hair removal. So depending on your hormone levels you hair may grow back a little. That’s why it is advised to go for a top-up treatment every year or so.

How long is the treatment? This depends on what you’re getting done. For example, I get a full body and this takes roughly 3 hours.

What does a full body treatment include? My ful body laser treatment means everything apart from my eyebrows, eyelashes and the hair on my head 🙂

Are there any side effects? As long as you follow your technician’s professional advise you should be fine!

I have very dark skin, can I get this laser done? Yes! This laser works on ALL SKIN TYPES – hurrah!

I have blonde hair, can I get this treatment done? No. Laser hair removal in general does not work on blonde, red or grey hair.

How much does this cost? This all depends on your clinic and your laser technician.

Would you recommend this to anyone? HELL YES. I have seen major differences since starting this treatment in February. For example, the hair on my legs, underarms and bikini is pretty much non existence.

Could I get the contact details for your laser technician? For full details of my laser hair removal clinic and technician, please visit

Just as a little disclaimer, I am not 100% sure on how this laser will be like for you as an individual which is why a consultation before getting something like this is a big, fat, must-have! I am also not a laser expert – I am just here sharing information about what I’ve learnt about lasers through my laser journey.

In my opinion the Long Pulsed Nd: YAG laser is the best laser for hair removal – even more so for Indian skins! If you are based in the Northamptonshire area and would like the details of my technician then please fill out the form above. as it’ll be the easiest way. Or feel free to drop me an email, tweet or leave me a message on my Facebook page 🙂

  • Wow! I am so jealous that you got your legs done!

I went in a couple of years ago to get my underarms done and it was supposed to take six sessions. Well, after that sixth we realized that I was going to need about three more since my hair was more coarse than most other people’s and it was going to be an extra $150 which I did not have.

Unfortunately, it’s as if I never did those six sessions to this day. Very sad. It was super painful for me!

    • Kaushal

Hello! I actually get my full body done – it’s brilliant! Oh no – must have been a different type of laser as this is one of the best types out there in the market! Definitely do for a Nd:YAG Laser if you do want to go for it in the future 🙂

  • Emily

Looks like you’ve tried lots of options, you must be so happy to have found a method that works for you 🙂 I bought the Philips Lumea about a year ago and that has done a great job, like you the hair on my under arms and bikini area is pretty much non existent but because the hair on my legs is quite fair it doesn’t work so well there! But I’m really happy with the results 😀 xxx

    • Kaushal

Thank you, Emily! Fab, lovely to hear positive stories about hair removal x

  • Huma

I’ve been researching about Laser treatments but found your post most useful – esp as we have the same skintones! I definitely want to look into Nd: YAG laser. May I ask how much Nd: Yag is costing you for your full body? Thank you so much for this post – it was so helpful!

    • Kaushal

Hi Huma, thanks for your comment! It’s costing me around £200 for a full body, per session. I hope that helps 🙂

  • Jay

    Hello Kaushal,

I hope you don’t mind me asking, but how much are you being charged for full body?

I’ve recently come across a clinic that uses both ND:Yag and Alexdralite combination laser.
They’re called Pro:Skin and are based in some Superdrug stores.
With all of that said, they’re VERY well priced.

So I just wanted to know what your thoughts were?

    Thanks in advance.

    • Kaushal

Hi Jay, thank you for your comment. It’s costing me around £200 for a full body, per session. I think if a laser like ND:Yag is based in a Superdrug, something isn’t very right? Just my opinion but I prefer going to a clinic rather than my local Superdrug – sounds so weird! Before getting any treatment like this, it’s best to do as much research as you can. I can totally put my hand on my heart and tell you that ND:Yag has changed my life and I’m only half way through my sessions 🙂

  • God I’m so sorry to hear about all your issues. I can’t relate to the issues with hair everywhere, but I know that it’s a lot more prominent for you and other people with darker skin than for the pale face that is me! But I was looking into this too, thinking I’ll do IPL but now I know I’ll do ND:YAG just in case – can’t hurt to do that one when it’s definitely more effective, right?

Do you know if these guys are any good?

    • Kaushal

Hiya Maria. No way, I would steer clear from IPL. I would go for a consultation and ask them all the questions especially if it’s an ND:YAG laser 🙂 I hope that helps! x

  • TB

    Hi Kaushal,

I’m very interested in the Laser hair removal you undertook with promising results. Do you mind me asking which specific clinic/lady you visited?

I am also south Asian with very dark (practically black) hair and it’s pretty much all over my body unfortunately! I really hope this works for me.

I read that you said you have to make sure each area is hair free. As you did your whole body including your face does this mean you had to shave your face as well prior to each session? And every other hard to reach area?

Also, I was wondering whether there were any London branches of the place you use or any London clinics you could recommend?

Or is any clinic that uses that specific YAG laser just as good?

Sorry for so many questions but any reply would be of great help thank you!!

    • Kaushal

      Hi Taha,

Yep, I had to shave everwhere I was getting laser. My technician is amazing and would help with the hard to reach areas like your back. I can’t say I know of any branches or clinics in London. I would definitely go to a clinic who used a ND:YAG Laser 🙂 No worries. Do drop me an email if you have any other questions!

  • Nisha

    Hi Kaushal!

Thank you so much for sharing your journey! I’ve been interested in laser for a long time, but had heard all the stories about it not really working.

I am interested in the YAG laser method; can you provide me details of the lady you go to?

    • Kaushal

Hi Nisha, no worries at all! Of course, would you be able to email me? 🙂

  • Rachel

Hi, thanks for your blog! Do you have an update on how your treatments are going? Have you completed and how is your hair growth going?

    • Kaushal

Hi Rachel! No worries at all 🙂 I’ve been really bad as I haven’t gone back for my 7th treatment (it’ll be about 2/3 months late) but my hair growth has almost stopped in most areas 🙂 It’s all dependent on the person where this can be but I’m so glad I’m getting the treatment done!

  • Liposuction21

informative post but Hair look great only when on head. Unwanted hair at different body parts add an ungroomed and untidy look to your personality. They are equally frustrating for both men and women, this is the reason people are often seen spending hours in salons getting waxed, threaded or shaved– all painful yet temporary solutions. Effects of waxing and threading last for 3 to 4 weeks, while shaved hair regrow within a week. for more info visit on Laser Hair Removal in Dubai

  • Laser Hair Removal is great. I did them a couple of times myself and it turned out alright. But, with an IPL device at home, you can perform hair removal yourself on other areas of your body without additional cost but with the same result if not better.

Hi, I looking to get my legs and arms hair
    removal done .

I am of Indian origin but I would consider my
skin type to be 3 ( which is being fair according to Indian skin ) Though I
have a very combination hair on my leg which ranges from very dark thick hair
to light hair. I was thinking of going for Nd Yag laser but just want to be
sure if that laser will be able to target the fine hair too..

I have enquired in few clinics and really
confused between which laser machine would be best for my skin! Option are below

3 Fotona’s XP-MAX – which is only Nd Yag but got
    some good reviews online

Cynosure Elite MPX and Candela GentleMax are both
Alexandrite Laser and Nd Yag but I have read mixed reviews about them.

I would be glad if you can guide me which one
would be best for my skin type

This is such a lovely post! I just got back from a wonderful laser treatment at Marina Medical Centre and this is what I needed. Your post laser tips are great. I need those. Also, I’d like to add that picking a nice laser technician is important!

Laser hair removal is usually a lot faster, because larger sections of hair can be treated simultaneously, but everyone want the best product, which give permanent result, at one hour ago, i read one article from, they offer good products, and i think we can use it. they offer hair removal devices which we can also use on face.

    Hi Kaushal!

I love your blog! How’s your laser journey now after 3 years? Just curious with your result! I’m also an asian and was mislead by our nearby clinic that their hair removal method was laser but in fact it was an IPL. I’ve gone 6 sessions with them and no result. I gave up and just wasted like $600 for that treatment. I wish I had done my research first before believing their crap.

I had waxed ever since and finally gave a device for home use a try. I’m currently using the me Smooth elos since it’s the only device that works for my skin tone. So far I’m so happy with the result after 6 months of use. It’s so much better. If ever you’ll be in the same journey as mine, please let me know!
